Extended wear contact lenses are contacts that are made for more than twenty-four hours of continuous use. And when extended wear lenses were first introduced, they were often called 30-day contacts. But at the time, it wasn't known how important it is that contact lenses pass an adequate supply of oxygen to your cornea. And later testing found that lenses worn more than a week would build up enough bacteria that could cause infections and other problems.

After these results came to light, the Food and Drug Administration rescinded approval of 30-day contacts and approved continuous wear for no more than a week. And for about ten years, there were no contact lenses that you could safely wear for more than a week.
