At one time contact lenses were made of a hard plastic, which caused them to be uncomfortable and custom produced, which made them expensive. But since the introduction of soft contacts, that's changed. The lenses are still plastic, but of a much different variety. The lens material is water absorbent and becomes soft and very flexible when wet. And with the ability to mass-produce the lenses, soft contacts have become cheap.

And since they're cheap and comfortable, you can choose a variety of colors and styles. Color contacts can come without vision correction, so just about anyone can wear them.

The color contacts that change eye color are commonly called opaques. The contacts have a non-transparent tint that covers your iris, so the only color your eyes show comes from the tint. Improperly fitting contact lenses can cause serious eye problems. And after you get the lenses, unless they're a disposable type, it's important to follow the instructions you're given for keeping them clean.
