Eliminate Eye Problems with Contacts for Dry Eyes

Many people who want to wear contacts need to have contacts for dry eyes. Dry eyes are a common problem and unfortunately there's no one solution that's right for everybody. However, if you have your tears tested, it's easier to determine what kind of contacts for dry eyes would be appropriate.

Before you try to find contacts for dry eyes, you need to determine the reason your eyes dry out. The makeup of your tears is much more than salty water, they also contain oils and a substance called "mucin". Mucin helps your tears cover and adhere to eyes. And the presence of the oils slow the tears evaporation.

The other condition that provokes a need for contacts for dry eyes, is simply not producing enough tears. This can be a natural occurrence or due to disease, the use of some medications, or even pregnancy. Additionally, everyone's eyes produce fewer tears as they age.

If it's determined that you produce plenty of tears but they're low in mucin or oils, then you probably need a lens that helps retain your tears. Contacts for dry eyes which would help do this are soft lenses with a high water content. Some soft contacts are designed to hold twice as much water as others, so you need to check the specifications for the lens.

If you find that the quality of your tears is good, but you don't produce enough of them, then you could look at two other types of contacts for dry eyes. The first would be a soft lens with a low water content. This type of lens doesn't need to absorb as much of your tears to retain its shape. And the second solution would be a rigid gas permeable lens, which doesn't require any water from your tears to perform.

Proclear Compatibles are an example of specially designed contacts for dry eyes. They have a biocompatible surface which allows a more natural flow of your tears and oxygen to your cornea.
